Bha mi glè dhuilich an naidheachd sin a leughadh air làrach-lìn BBC Alba:

Ban-rìgh nan seinneadairean Gàidhlig, agus tidsear brosnachail do dh’iomadh Gàidheal òg, gu h-àiraidh tro na Fèisean.

Seo Iseabail a’ seinn  / here is Ishbel singing:

I was saddened to hear about the sudden death of Ishbel Macaskill. She was the Queen of Gaelic singers and a great teacher and inspiration to  many, especially through the Fèisean.

Tobar an Dualchais / Kist o’ Riches

Lèirmheas / review

’S e proiseact uabhasach inntinneach is feumail a th’ ann an Tobar an Dualchais do dhuine sam bith aig a bheil ùidh ann an dualchas na h-Alba (Gàidheal no Gall) san fhairsaingeachd agus ann an eachdraidh shòisealta is ceòl tradiseanta gu h-àraidh.

Bha amas fad-fhadharcach aig a’ phroiseact:

….tha [Tobar] an dùil clàir-fhuaim Gàidhlig agus Albais a chur gu cruth didseatach agus a chatalogadh, gus an sgaoileadh air-loidhne. Nì seo cinnteach gun glèidhear am beairteas mòr sgeulachdan, bàrdachd, ciùil agus fiosrachaidh mar chunntas àraid de chultar agus cànan ann an Alba. Mar thoradh, bidh na clàir rim faighinn gu furasta airson feumalachdan foghlaim agus pearsanta

Seo bhideo uabhasach àlainn le Lucy Hughes mu leumadairean-mara na Linne Mhoreibh timcheall air Rubha na Cananaich is na Sùdraichean, is e air a dhèanamh fad cuid de thadhalaichean agus air a dheasachadh gu h- ealanta.

This is a gorgeous video by Lucy Hughes of the Moray Firth dolphins around Chanonry Point and the Sutors, taken over several visits and beautifully edited.

Thanks to Lucy for making this available on YouTube and enabling embedding.

Ùrachadh: ceangal gu artaigil le dealbhan uabhasach math soilleir is faisg bho Tim Stenton, is na leumadairean-mara a’ cluiche os cionn uachdar na linne.

Ma bha sibh airson faighinn a-mach dè an naidheachd mu Mhànran agus ‘Latha Math’ anns an eadar-àm, seo mar a bha na cùisean aig deireadh na seachdain sa chaidh:

No. 1 in the UK singer/songwriter charts

No. 6 in the Scottish charts

No. 6 in the Radio 1 indie charts

No. 61 in the UK charts

Cha d’ rinn iad an gnothach leis na UK charts – bha iad airson No 40 a ruigsinn – ach tha sin barrachd is math gu leòr. Mealaibh ur naidheachd, a h-uile duine, agus suas leis a’ Ghàidhlig anns na charts!

In case you were wondering, Mànran didn’t quite make the top 40 in the UK charts last week as they’d hoped, but they did pretty well all round nevertheless.  Let’s hear it for Gaelic in the charts!

Fèilltean-teine na Bliadhn’ Ùire agus na Seann Bhliadhn’ Ùire

Tha mi a’ sgrìobhadh am pìos seo air an dàrna latha dheug den Fhaoilteach, latha na Seann Bhliadhn’ Ùire. Ron acharradh air a’ mhìosachan Ghregòrianach ann an 1752, seo an latha air an deach a’ Bhliadhna’ Ùr a chumail. Air a’ Ghàidhealtachd ghlèidh iomadh àite an t-Seann Bliadhn’ Ùr fad ceud bliadhna is barrachd às dèidh sin, clachan cròitearachd Blàr mac Faoilteach ann an Loch Abar fiù ‘s gus na 1950an. Ach cha mhòr nach deach a dìochuimhneachadh tro na bliadhnachean, ach a-mhàin anns na coimhearsneachdan a tha ga comharradh le tachartasan traidiseanta sònraichte a tha bèo slàn fhathast , mar am Broch leis an fhèill-teine ainmeil aige ‘Losgadh a’ Chlèibh’ air an 11 den Fhaoilteach, Oidhche Chaillain den t-seann mhìosachan.

The confident young Scottish band Mànran, with well-known members like Norrie MacIver and Gary Innes, are trying to be the first band of the 21st century to get a Gaelic song into the the Top 40. (Runrig and Capercaillie managed it at the end of the 20th century.)

Briosgaidean Nollaige / Christmas biscuits

 Margaidhean Nollaige sa Ghearmailt

Tòisichidh an Nollaig gu math tràth sa Ghearmailt, leis na Margaidhean Nollaige a bhios ann ceithear no coig seachdainean ro Nollaig fhèin anns na bailtean beaga is mòra air feadh na dùthcha. Ged a tha feadhainn dhiubh an là an-diugh aig nach eil ach sùil air pròthaid, mar a tha e aig àm Nollaige ann an àiteachan eile cuideachd, ‘s e cho tradiseanta ‘s a tha a’ mhòrchuid dhiubh fhathast a tha cho iongantach agus tarraingeach do luchd-tadhail à dùthchannan eile.

Bho thùs bha na mairghaidean ann airson cothrom a thoirt dhan luchd-ceàirde ionadail agus siubhail an cuid bathair a reic, agus dha na daoine, gu h-àiridh air an dùthaich, bathar sònraichte fhaighinn aon turas sa bhliadhna co-dhiù. Agus fiu’s an-diugh fhèin, tha rudan brèagha ri fhaotainn san àm ron Nollaig nach bi thu a’ faicinn anns na bùithtean àbhaisteach no aig amannan eile.   continue reading…
